Conceptual Charcoal_ Stripped

For this project the brief tasked us to create a conceptual drawing study making use of charcoal as the medium. We had to choose one of the following terms: Progression; regression; metamorphosis and transformation as a point of departure. We needed to make use of various objects, together with a human or animal element to demonstrate the given theme.

I investigated the themes of regression and transformation within this conceptual piece.

Size: A2    |    Medium: Charcoal    |    Stripped

My concept is centered around how one must reach a point of regression, a return to a simpler state that ultimately allows for transformation to take place.

My concept is centered around how the seasons of Autumn and Winter and the act of trees being stripped of their leaves to reveal what is pure is a metaphor for a person’s life and how everyone is subjected to go through trials that will prune you and shape you into a stronger and more resilient person. The person who you are supposed to be. When leaves fall from trees as Autumn turns into winter the trees are stripped of whatever is merely temporary and non-essential. All that remains is what is pure and what will survive. Winter is considered a model of excellence at the kind of artistry that is created by pruning.

We as people go through hardships and trials that essentially make up our winter season that we experience in each of our lives. This winter which brings trials and obstacles that we see as cold and harsh will shape, bend and often twist us in many ways. It allows us to overcome these trials and let go of the petty things in our lives that we no longer need. This reveals our true selves that have been cleansed and have weathered storms. This concept allows one to truly understand the trials ones goes through themselves and how we need to become stronger.
Thank you.
